Bhrigu’s Kick and the Cosmic Egg
What existed when nothing was?
In that dreamless slumber before creation, the stars began their stories. And here, on the first degree of Aries, we take our first step into the 108-fold path of the Moon.
This episode is a descent into the origin myths of the cosmos. We begin with the sleeping gods – Vishnu reclining on the serpent Ananta, Shiva in blissful awareness, and the dark goddess Mahamaya in her yoga-nidra. But it is the ancient sage Bhrigu who awakens the universe when he kicks the sleeping Vishnu, leaving a mark upon his chest – the Śrīvatsa – one of the spots wherefrom all life springs anew.
From that single moment, the stories unfold:
– The cosmic egg Brahmāṇḍa, sealed with a golden crack, birthing the first creatures of slither and flight
– The Banyan tree at the south pole, whose roots became branches and branches became roots
– The three hearts of the Unicorn, the three lotuses of Hercules, and the nine serpents of Soma-Vāsudeva
– The star Kurdah – the blaze upon the horse’s brow – and the Cocoon Nebula, where the soul’s breath transmigrates across lifetimes
– Hanuman’s tail becoming the constellation Phoenix, burning down the sky-city of Lanka
– Vamana’s three steps, closing the gates of heaven and letting the holy waters flow through Vishnu’s toenail into our galaxy
We trace the seven stars of this first step – from the Altar of Agni to the spear of Shiva, from the cord of Eros and Aphrodite to the chakra marks that connect the mind, the breath, and the heart.
